THE HISTORY

It was the year of 1850, one hundred years before Lyra Belacqua's birth, and the world of human and daemon seemed to be at peace. Svalbard was flourishing, bringing more resources such as prey to the bears who inhabited its icy landscape. In the city of Oxford, population rose staggeringly, businesses experienced growth, and colleges had to expand due to the sudden interest in education. But the shadow of the Magisterium did not falter. They had gotten news of a witch clan prophecy that alerted them to an extreme. Most members of the Magisterium took no note of the prophecy, denouncing it as heresy and evil witchcraft. But other people were taken aback by it. Eventually word of this event had spread across the Magisterium, across Oxford, across the world.

A girl named Aurora Polaris and her daemon, Sirion, lived behind the walls of Jordan College at the time of the prophecy. Aurora was an orphan taken in by the college at the time of her birth, thirteen years before.

Aurora pertains to the prophecy greatly, and the Magisterium are racing the witches to get to her first. But Aurora sets out on the adventure as well, told by the master of Jordan College that she is the human in the prophecy. Along her journey, Aurora will encounter secrets, myths, lies, challenges, and the truth of her adventure. But perhaps the most startling truth of all is this: The prophecy is not about a human. It is about a daemon.

What is the prophecy? Whose daemon is the prophecy referring to? Who will find Aurora and Sirion first? And who will not survive the war that is surely to come? It's all in your hands...

"Tineak, do you think they'll be mad?"

The raven fluttered his wings in worried agitation, but quickly set them back against his sides. "Why should they be? We're not doing anything wrong, are we? We're just getting you some cloud pine."

Rel sighed and but a hand to her head, running it carefully through her dark brown hair and twirling the end of one set of strands around her finger. "I know. But still."

Her daemon nodded quietly, then sighed. "But still."

The young witch took a deep breath, then exhaled softly. She began to walk again, concentrating on that motion; left foot, right foot, left, right. Above her, Tineak was flying in slow circles, occasionally dipping down if he saw a branch that might be useful; but the pine boughs up high were in general too thin for even Relinde's slight frame. Down on the ground, they were thicker, and carried the witch's weight much more easily.

"This one." Rel brushed her hand along one branch before raising her voice. "Tineak! Come help me get this branch off the tree, will you?"

No!

Rel jumped and gave a small shriek; in the air, Tineak's wings stiffened, and he fell several feet before recovering them and gliding down to perch on his human's shoulder. Both shivered, standing as still as possible, waiting- but a minute passed, then another, and the voices didn't say anything else. Slowly the two relaxed and moved on, leaving behind the branch that had been disapproved by those mysterious entities.

"I'd give anything to be able to climb."
Relinde frowned as she gazed up into the trees, wishing she wasn't bound to finding a branch from the ground.

"Or you could just be less particular."

"Well, I don't just want any old branch!"

This was an ongoing argument; where most witches weren't choosy with their cloud pine, Rel was always exceedingly conscientious of length and diameter and sometimes even color. Tineak, on the other hand, couldn't care less.

"They all fly, don't they?"

Rel shrugged, deciding not to dignify that with an answer.

"Oh, you really are impossible."
The raven's words had an affectionate ring to them, and his human smiled softly as she turned her face toward him.

"I know."

In exasperation, Tineak took off from Rel's shoulder, flying a few feet ahead and landing on a branch. "This one, eh? See, I flap around a little, find a nice sturdy bough. Nothing special, nothing particular, but it works."

Relinde strode over to her daemon's newly-found branch, studying it carefully. "Actually, I think this one will work."

"Finally." Tineak rolled his mis-matched eyes, but nonetheless hopped up and down on the branch to help jar it loose as Rel pulled it off. The voices stayed silent this time, much to the relief of both.

"Shall we go home, then?"

"Home it is indeed."

But Relinde had only gotten so far as to sling the pine over her shoulder and take two steps toward home when they were stopped.

Stay were you are!

"W-why?" Rel was trembling, as she always did when addressing the voices, and her voice had a definite quaver to it that she didn't even bother trying to mask.

It's not your place to question. Just stay there!

With a meek nod, Rel sank to the ground and leaned her head against the tree, holding her new branch in her lap. Tineak spiraled down and landed next to her, leaning his black head against his human's side. She put a hand to him, running her fingers quietly through his long feathers for comfort.

No matter what the voices did, she always had Tineak.

The soft flutter of wings announced Arainyea's appearance beside Ködanai Zsarátnok. Her hand brushed the side of his soft white fur, fingers traveling over feathery white wings.

This looks like a good place to stop, he said softly, puching his wolfy muzzle into her curly blonde hair. Ködanai smiled softly and steered her way into the thicket of trees, searching for an opening safe enough to land.

Good, because I'm starving! she laughed, landing her cloud pine stick softly on the floor. The young witch sat cross-legged on the ground, pulling out a pack.

She silently chewed an apple, sucking the juices out while Arainyea stalked a mouse in his cat form. She studied him while she ate, contemplating his differences from the others. Of course, every one of his forms had wings. That was the main, and probably only, difference.

Suddenly Arainyea's head snapped up and he sniffed the wind. I think I hear someone, he muttered in her head. Ködanai's seafoam blue eyes widened, and she nodded.

Slim white hand on the hilt of her dagger, padding forwards through the thicket of green leaves. The sight of a girl, a witch, made her confused. What was she doing, simply sitting there?

Is there something wrong? She asked the girl, hand on her shoulder.
