Kayla smiled. "You used to be into witches?" Stormation turned into an ermime, sitting up on his hind legs, listening intently.
"My mother was a witch." Kayla whispered to Artemis, so no one else, not even Daja could hear. "You can't tell anyone that, Artemis." For once, her blue eyes were serious, and her whole face looked seriously at Artemis.
Stormation eyed his human carefully, then looked at Skyran, nodding.

Artemis and Skyran took a long look at each other, trying to think of what the other would look or act like as a witch. Hah! If they were, they wouldn't have to put up with any of the foulness of the Magisterium or the old masters of Jordan.
Skyran collapsed on the ground, trying to stifle her laughter, and and Artemis began to laugh openly.
"We weren't actually witches," she explained, still giggling. 'We used to be into them--y'know? I was so interested by them, and their daemons. Skyran and I used to research them, all the time. If we were, I certainly wouldn't be here, I'd certainly be a lot older than thirteen, and Skyran would be a bird, not a lioness." Her face darkening, she added, "And she'd be able to get very far away from me if she wanted. We wouldn't be elochophobic."

"Yeah, witches are 'mazin', but I en't at all sure I'd like to be 'un," Daja said. "I don' wanna be a bird," Tarquin said. He stretched and flexed his long, sharp claws. "Bein' a leopard is much more fun." Daja grinned. "Exactly." Changing the subject, she said, "But what's elocophobia? I know a few fears, but not that 'un. What is it?

((Actualy, maybe you should change it back, because now Artemis's post doesn't make sense. It could be that Kayla just misheard or something, that's possible. You don't have to listen to me, though, it's not really my business. ))

Artemis looked back at Daja, and put her head to the side, as though willing Daja to think of the answer because it seemed obvious that Artemis thought everyone else knew what it was.
"Fear of crowded spaces," said Artemis, her voice slightly higher from fear, and Skyran moved closer, her pelt rippling in a shiver. "Skyran and I can't stand them--we freeze up, we try and make ourselves smaller. You know what I mean," said Artemis to Daja, nodding. Daja had been there on several occasions in the city when Artemis and Skyran had done odd things to avoid being trapped in crowds.

Kayla started reading the book on witches again, Stormation bounded onto her lap as an ermime and ran up to his human's shoulder. "Look, Storma." Kayla traced her finger over the book, the layers of writing. "It says that witches tell prophecy's, and they find the right person to do the job."
Stormation bounded into her lap, as a cat. "Y'know, Kayla, there are a lot of people in the world. Don't getcha hopes up." "I ain't." "Yeh you are." "Shut up." She stroked Storma with one hand, while holding the book and reading in the other.

"Oh yeah, I knew that," Daja replied to Artemis. "But c'mon, it en't that bad. You've handled it b'fore. 'Sides, you gotta face your fears. Ya can't stay hide forever." "Hypocrite," Tarquin muttered at her feet. He knew the way she was with deep water...she was terrified of it. She never went in over her head. Ever. And it was the same way with confined spaces. With thunderstorms and cemetaries, Daja could handle and master her fears, but this was different. It was the crack in her armor, and it made her furious. "Be quiet, Tarquin." He smirked. "Well, I reckon sum'un's a little snip--" "I said, BE QUIET!!" Daja snarled. "Just shut the hell up, Tarquin, or I'll kick ya effin' face in. I don' care if it hurts me too; it'd be worth it. So ya'd d**ned well better SHUT YOUR FRICKIN' PIEHOLE!!" ((I'm sorry about the swearing...the rules say a little cussing is aloud, but if this is too much, I'll fix it. Don't want to insult anyone. )

{{lol}} A small side-grin appeared on Kayla's face. Of course, no one could see it accept her daemon, who was his ermine-form, curled up in the fold of Kayla's arm. He twitched his small white ears.
"Woah. I thought you were the one who couldn't control your own gob." Stormation said into Kayla's mind. "Shut up." Kayla replied.
Kayla looked at Daja again. She looked so angry with her daemon. Of course, yes, Kayla was angry with Stormation some of the time, but she never swore at him.

Artemis looked around warily, but she was grinning at Daja's outburst.
"Lord, Daja, keep it down, would you? If we wake all those crotchety old men up . . . you haven't seen them in a temper the way I have." Artemis smiled to herself, and Skyran gave a little gruff purr. They had angered the scholars on more than one occasion, with their blatant disregard for the way wealthy and educated young women are supposed to act.
"But I'm not ever going into a crowd, Daja, if I can help it. Ever," she added to her friend, glaring. "The day you jump into a hundred foot lake, is the day I'll take part in rush hour in the streets of Oxford."

Kayla chuckled slightly at Artemis' comment. "Hey, Storma, shall we go? I'm gettin' a bit.. well.." "Tired?" Storma guessed. He knew Kayla never admitted she was tired. Kayla frowned. "No. Not that." Her jaws parted into a wide yawn. "Tired." "I'm not tired." "Yes you are. Now come on." Sighing, Kayla stumbled to her feet. Stormation jumped off her lap as she stood, in mid-motion turning from an ermime to a tiger.
"See ya, Artemis, Daja." Kayla yawned, and trudged out of the room. As soon as her striped daemon came out behind her, she shut the door with a rusty creak.

Daja scowled, and for a moment contemplated punching Artemis's lights out. But she didn't beat up people weaker then her, unless they really deserved it. It wasn't right. "I don' jump into hundred foot lakes cause I can't swim, and I'm not really in a suicidal mood now," she lied. " But there en't nothin' bad that could happen jest walkin' down a street. You can't hide out up here forever, afta all. You've gotta learn t' get over it eventually." And I'll do the same thing, Daja thought to herself. I en't gonna let these stupid fears rule me. "'Sides, we don' hafta go out in broad daylight. We can go at night. Like now," Daja said suddenly. "C'mon, let's go, Art. Let's help ya get over yourself."

"Fine," muttered Artemis, closing the book that she was halfheartedly leafing through. Dust motes flew away from the old covers as it shut, and Artemis shoved it across the table to a stack of tomes awaiting sorting by the librarian in the morning. "But when the summer rolls around, and the water gets warm again, I'm taking you swimming in the lake down by where the Gyptians dock and the clayburners work."
She got up, pushed her chair back up against the table, and shrugged on her jacket. It was a stiff, grey fleece, heavy and warm. It was also a boy's jacket, but Artemis didn't care. Skyran got to her paws too, stretching and yawning--the tiredness that Artemis betrayed.
"Let's do this," said Artemis resignedly. "I warn you though--people get any close to touching us again, and I will make sure Skyran rips Tarq's head off."
