Character's name: Artemis Hawke
Nicknames: Hawk (by both friends and enemies)
Species: Human
Gender: Female
Age and birthdate: 13. Born May 19, 1837
Physical appearance (2-3 paragraphs): Rather short, but lithe for her age, the thirteen year old has a distinctive rather scrawny appearance, though she tends to hold herself rigidly and proud. Her bushy brown hair is cropped at her shoulders, and is usually fairly unkept, simply hacked through with a brush in the morning, and before bed. Her eyes are a bright blue-green, which tend to be either shining with curiosity, or flashing from impatience or anger.
Artemis has a pale complexion, from sitting indoors reading and studying, the perfect activity at Oxford. She is spangled head to toe with freckles that she has no clue as to how she got them in the first place; spending very little time out in the sun, and will probably grow out of them in the next year or so. Already, they have grown fainter, except for those splashed across the bridge of her nose.
Artemis wears dark blue, wire rimmed glasses, earned from constant reading, and other eye-straining abilities that can cause ones self to become near-sighted, though it also is said to run in her family.
Studious for a thirteen year old, Artemis dresses almost formally all the time, though in clothing that could be considered more appropriate for a boy of her age. A neat shirt, generally with a collar, grey slacks, a plain brown leather belt, and basic but sturdy shoes. Not at all stylish, it certainly can not be said that Artemis is a fine dresser, and has more than once raised protest over attending formal gatherings wearing a boy's dinner jacket and pants.
Special abilities: Decent artistic skills.
Likes: Books, art, animals, history, philosophy.
Dislikes: Attention, crowds, spiders.
Fears: Arachnids, the Magisterium's growing power, loss of free will.
Interests: Classic literature, geography, philosophy, the Arts, biology.
Personality (2-3 paragraphs): Artemis is reclusive, and rather antisocial. She does not enjoy being among crows, and has been known to become almost claustrophobic while in large cities or groups of people. Queer, but friendly enough in Oxford, her home, Artemis haunts the libraries, galleries, roofs, and the occasional kitchen or tower.
Sharp in mind and tongue, Artemis can be (or tries to be) evilly witty in the ways of retorts, which is useful enough for her, as she is stubborn, and can be extremely argumentative towards enemies or rivals. Despite being rather small for her age, she has been known to involve herself in fights, one of the few reasons for her to draw herself out around others. Despite her general suspicion of other people, and hobbies of being alone and by herself and her daemon, Artemis is adventurous, albeit apprehensive.
Artemis has always found women's role in her era tedious at best, and has not overlooked the fact that females were never allowed into the Retiring Room at Jordan. Her hobbies, more suited for a boy, or at least more accepted for a boy, are frowned upon by scholars and members of the Magisterium at Jordan, but Artemis ignores them, dresses how she pleases, and does what she wants. Artemis wishes to be a scholar, but given the ways of the powers that be, she would not be allowed to be one, due to being a girl. Artemis, however, doens't care what the scholars thinks, and does what she pleases, planning to somehow figure out a way to make them accept her when she is old enough.
Daemon's name: Skyran
Species (your daemon's favorite form): Lioness (daemon has settled)
Gender: Female
Appearance (2-3 paragraphs, picture is optional):
Skyran has settled, her final form being that of a lioness, with an unusually white pelt-golden pelt, like some of the rare lions of Kruger, South Africa. Large enough, her head reaches Alyson's elbow, and she stands at the shoulder around three feet. She has large paws, and like wild lions, sharps and long claws, though they are usually kept sheathed.
Skyran has mellow but powerful-seeming amber eyes, and she holds herself proud and tall. The lioness has been known to use her rather usually large size for a daemon against others' daemons, and will pin them down under her large paws if irritated.
Personality (2-3 paragraphs): Strong, and willful, Skyran is not unlike Artemis at all, and the two get along very, very well. Slightly more cautious then Artemis, Skyran is generally the one to ensure that whatever they get up to isn't too dangerous, or will get them in serious trouble. However, she is just as prideful against the scholars as Artemis, and can be nearsighted when it comes to this.
However, Skyran has the instincts of a lion, which Artemis has been known to share, and it is noted that she can be rather catlike. She is not afraid to pick fights with others, especially while defending what she feels is right, and generally has Artemis's permission to use her claws, teeth, and strength against other daemons as she deems neccessary.
Independent, the two often keep company with only each other, though both, particularly Skyran, are very loyal to others, and protective of friends.
History (optional): While the two were younger, they both faced difficulties with themselves and each other, trying to figure out what made them different from others so that Skyran would be the same gender as Artemis. They were sometimes teased by the other children, and though Artemis has always felt that it was only right for Skyran to be female like her, it led to a little bout of self-doubting, until they worked out together that whoever they are or end up, it will be right for them. They still aren't quite sure why, though Artemis has talents in the visual arts, and they suspect that something like that might have something to do with it, as gifts can sometimes cause such things.
Family lineage:
Brother: Ethen
Mother: Ginaria Marias
Father: Lawrence Hawke
Grandmother [maternal]: Aeritha Marias [deceased]
Grandfather [maternal]: Strategous Marias [Teaches at Oxford]
Grandmother [paterna]: Theria Hawke
Grandfather [paternal]: Tranton Hawke [Lives in another college near Jordan with Theria]
History (6-8 paragraphs): Artemis come from a line of scholars, their subjects ranging from dark matter to botany. Several have been heretics in the eyes of the Magisterium, and she does not have the best view of them or them of her, either. Artemis wishes to continue this tradition, and for her age is rather learned, or at least cultured and educated. Her generations succeed through most of Jordan college, and have a good place in Oxford. Artemis has lived almost all her life in Jordan, mostly with her family, though they periodically travel for research and study. Currently, Artemis is alone in Jordan, except for her grandparents, as her father, mother, and younger brother are on an expedition to research in the African continent, while Hawk continues her studies.
Artemis has lived at Oxford since birth, her father a well known scholar in studies on dark particles of matter, though they have spent some time trying to evade the Magisterium. However, originally, he taught and they lived in Linacre College, another of the colleges of Oxford, but the family (Artemis was about two) moved to Jordan, after her father was accused of crimes against the Magisterium after a lecture he did about how dark matter could be used to create new ways of truth telling--even though the Magisterium had confiscated and destroyed all known alethiometers had been destroyed.
After this, they had to spend the next few years away from Oxford, worried that they would run into trouble with the power of the Magisterium if they stayed to teach and study. The family decided to travel, and write about what they found for educational journals.
From the time she was three until almost five, Artemis's family traveled around the African continent, studying wildlife and culture. Artemis's father continued to secrets study the use of dark matter, but Artemis's mother did her best to make him stop these studies, for fear it would continue to uproot the family. For the most part, her father kept his promise, but they have continued to run into small problems with the colleges over the years.
After Africa, they moved back towards Western Europe, but did not return to Jordan until Artemis was ten. Before that, they spent time in universities in Rome, Athens, and even spent several months on an expedition to Svalbard. Artemis was left behind with her brother and mother on this one, and never quite forgave her parents for this, as she was little, and really was the only one who wanted to go in the first place.
Intermittently between these expeditions, Artemis lived at Jordan, in her family's studies and rooms. Artemis did not like being alone with just the scholars and servants, and generally fending for herself in the halls of the college, but began to revel with Skyran in the quiet, and the solitary.
To keep her out of trouble, Artemis's father convinced the scholars to give Artemis a decent education, and they have done this, albeit grudgingly. Artemis has managed to make some good friends since among certain scholars, but has generally forsaken her father's area of expertise, dark matter. Artemis can be very grudging, and though she loves both her parents dearly, Artemis never really forgave her father's teaching for keeping them on the move for the majority of her childhood. This had made Artemis rather antisocial, and she didn't have many friends growing up, and guarded within herself.
Since then, Artemis has been very studious, and generally considers herself a scholar, studying biomes, biology, and art. She herself is very gifted in visual artwork, and spends hours bring out what she studies into pictures.
Role-play sample (2-3 paragraphs):
Artemis Hawke frowned slightly as she smudged the ink on the parchment that she was pouring over. Sighing, she wiped the side of her hand with a once-white cloth, and stuck her quill back into the pot of ink, and leaned back to critically observe the drawing, which was the skeleton of a big cat. Descriptions and information were scrawled in tiny handwriting, with arrows pointing to various parts of the illustration.
The desk at which Artemis sat was very large, and made of a dark oak, thick and polished. Brass could be found in small ornaments along the sides and handles, though the majority of the piece's surface was covered in notes, books, ink sets, and still wet sketches. As she leaned back, she had to sit up again and tuck her legs underneath her so that she could see well enough over the side of the chair, it was so deep, though very comfortable, and made of leather which matched the tone of the desk.
The room was in a similar state. It wasn't a very large room, and almost completely circular, as it was located in one of the towers, and along with the desk and chair, it was crammed with bookshelves, an easel, an assortment of large instruments which Artemis knew very little about, several maps were pinned up against the walls, tottering piles of notes, and various bits of art supplies. The walls were painted a dark mahogany, which might have been a warm, supple color if the room had been lit better. The only light came from a faint light set into the high ceiling, which formed the inside of a cone, and the large arched window that was set into the eastern side, which gave view to Jordan's orchard, and a few of the neighboring roofs.
On a carpet the color of wine, a lioness with a light golden-white pelt yawned and stretched luxuriously, blinking sleepily in the only shaft of dappled sunlight. Artemis's daemon got to her paws, and looked longingly out of the window, contemplating a bird on the sill.
Artemis fumbled in one of drawers of the desk, checking the time on a worn pocket-watch. "Almost dinnertime," she said, yawning. "Another all-nighter, then, Skyran. Wow, I'm tired. I blame you," she said, grinning at Skyran.
"Why me?" asked the lioness, putting her head to the side, and looking affronted.
"Because you are a creature that would naturally spend over twenty hours a day sleeping," replied Artemis, getting out of the chair and walking over (while avoiding as best she could most of the clutter) to Skyran, and the window. Stroking the great creature's pelt, Artemis gazed out of the window as well.
"Let's go out, it's stuffy in here," she said, and Skyran nodded eagerly. Artemis undid the latch on the window, and opened it. Gripping the trailing branch of a close-growing apple tree for support, Artemis climbed cat-like out of the window, and leapt easily onto the slanted roof below, Skyran following with ease, closing the window almost all the way behind her.
"C'mon, let's go," purred the lioness, leading the way across the rooftops of Jordan.
