Character's name: Zephaniah Mallory
Nicknames: Zeph
Species: Human / gyptian
Gender: Male
Age and birth date: 15. March 27, 1834 (1835?)
Physical appearance:
Zeph's coarse black hair is slightly wavy and falls into his wide shamrock green eyes. The same hair curls around his ears, and is starting to tickle the back of his neck. His skin is a golden tan and is starting to get darker from a combination of his heritage and spending most of his day in the sun, whether on a boat, or running through cities and towns. He's a bundle of wiry muscle, and is a scrapper, even though he's a little under average, at 5'9".
He can usually be caught wearing a loose white shirt tucked into a pair of repeatedly sewn brown pants and bare feet. His long, agile fingers are often filching things from unsuspecting carts. When he's noticed, he's a pretty fast runner, and can usually escape, . If he can't then he can usually use his wide eyes to appear innocent, though as he gets older, it works less and less. With his increasing age, he's starting to notice girls more and more, turning his devilish smile on any girl that strikes his fancy, and has been known to knick useless trinkets for random useless girls.
Special abilities: Thievery
Likes: girls, swimming, stories, fighting
Dislikes: Getting lost, Rejection, cold weather, losing anything
Fears: Zeph currently thinks he's invincible, and pretends to be that way also. Though, he is afraid of heights, even though he tries to hide it.
Interests: Seeing what he can get away with, trying to read, fishing, fighting, and girls.
Personality:
Zeph isn't the brightest when it comes to history, math, or reading (In fact, he doesn't even know how), but can filch about anything with the aid of his faithful daemon, Cadeyrn. He generally doesn't sit still, but if you happen to know an interesting story, you can distract him for as long as you need. He's particularly fond of The Armored Bears. He doesn't give up on anything easily. He can be charming if he needs to, but is usually more sarcastic and a bit mean.
He gets separated from his family on many occasions, but always manages to find another Gyptian willing to take him to the next port. His mother worries about him, but he always tells her that if he can't find a ride, he'll just see her in a year. He has almost no sense of direction once inside a city, but put him in the water, and he can make it anywhere. He thinks college's are interesting, but has never been inside one. He's fought college boys on many occasions, and doesn't think very highly of the scholars they turn in to. He values 'street smarts' above anything you can learn in a 'silly' book. He does, however, believe a lot of old folklore. He's got more energy than most, but appears relaxed in even the direst of situations.
What Zeph really longs for, though, is an adventure. Something big enough to put in the stories he loves so much. He's always on the lookout for someone to lead him to a heroic tale. He doesn't just want to be there, he wants to be the hero.
Daemon's name: Cadeyrn
Species: Red Fox (Settled)
Gender: Female
Appearance:
Cadeyrn is a slim red fox. She's a fiery orange-red. Still growing, the grey is still fading from high-up on her bright legs. She's often running around the feet of humans, careful to avoid them, and causing distractions. More wary of the surroundings than Zeph, she's always trying to tell him when he shouldn't be taking things, but he hardly ever listens. Cadeyrn, unlike Zeph, doesn't enjoy fighting, and tends to avoid contact with other Daemons.
Not only is Cadeyrn slender, she's a tiny bit taller than the average fox. It's hardly noticable, and doesn't give her any advanage over daemons. Her sharp orange eyes don't miss anything, and she can spot a liar from a mile away, and tries to keep trusting Zeph out of trouble. Cadeyrn has bitten Zeph with her sharp, white teeth to keep him away from the wrong people, or to make him cry to keep out of trouble.
Personality:
Cadeyrn is more reasonable than Zeph, but enjoys a good story as well, but doesn't become hypnotized like her other half. Cadeyrn is quite content to sit on a boat, and only spend a few days on land when they harbor. She doesn't like separating from the boats, and is always trying to tell Zeph to go back. She enjoys her few days on land, but doesn't like straying longer that she has to. She thinks towns are only pretty when decorated, and are otherwise drab and uninteresting. She's the more reasonable of the two.
Unlike Zeph, Cadeyrn is happy to live an ordinary life on a gyptian boat. She believes he'll grow out of his mischief, stop chasing silly girls, and stop dreaming of being a hero. She often reminds him that heroes often die. She thinks he'll grow out of stealing, but she hopes not, because it's a great way to waste a few hours. She appears to be more reasonable, but enjoys almost everything Zeph does, but likes to keep him out of trouble.
History:
Family lineage:
Mother-Branca Mallory
Father Unknown
History:
Zeph was born to Branca Mallory on a fairly peaceful spring night, on her Ma's boat, like most gyptians. His Daemon was born a strong otter pup, but didn't stay that way for long. It didn't take him too long to realize, unlike most children, he Father was absent. Though he badgered his mother for information, she refused to give him one drop. Zeph knows he takes after his father, because he only has his mother's eyes, and the rest of his features are foreign to his known family line.
Because his mom refuses to let him known anything about his father, he chooses to believe that his father is a strong, courageous, handsome man. Zeph has come to the conclusion that this means his Father must have been a hero of some sort, and often searches stories for him. He's often makes up stories of his Father’s great life, and tells them to anyone who will listen. He's positive that if gets into a widely-known legend, his father will find him.
He's always happy to live on a boat, and has never once thought of the land as a possibility. He's content to live with his ma and his half-siblings and their father for now, but is always searching for his story, his damsel in distress. His Mom is worried about his fascination, but has no idea why he loves stories so much. Since he was a kid, he's picked up how to use things to his advantage.
Zeph's Ma has let him wander since he was twelve, and only worried about him once. That time, he had fallen off a boat in a wicked storm, and it wasn't noticed until it was too late. Zeph, a little wet, but otherwards fine, wandered the creek, swam, and waited for another boat. His Ma temporarily suspended his boating privileges. He went out anyway.
Zeph, though he can do almost anything in a boat, has never bothered to read, do anything but simple math, and the only history he knows comes from legends. Combining all of this, put him in a city and he gets lost in a minute. Usually, he can just wander until he reaches water, or find some gyptian child who can get him back to the boats. If all else fails, he just lets his feet carry him though the city. This has failed on many occasions, but brought him to some interesting sights.
Zeph's never had to worry about more than finding his way to the boat, finding his Ma, and where his Father is. He's been pretty relaxed his whole life, never worrying over much more than what he was eating later. He wants an adventure, but he's not sure what he's getting himself into. He's never had hardship like a lot of other kids.
Role-play sample:
Zeph darted in between the crowd, the fair noisy around him, in his hand was a recently filched apple, and always a footstep behind him, a red fox. His black hair kept falling into his eyes, and he brushed them away with his free hand, eating the fresh apple with the other. He was looking around, searching for some one or something, not paying attention to his daemon's protests.
"You do realize that we should be-" The light, scolding voice carried above the crowd.
"Holding those horses?" He Finished, laughing, "Cadeyrn, lighten up. That post is plenty strong. I don't know what he was so worried about."
Cadeyrn shut up, and quietly followed Zeph through the crowd, huffing and puffing, muttering underneath her breath, while Zeph jumped up to see over the crowd. He stalled for a moment, looking at the stalls and buildings, trying to orientate himself in the city.
"Have we been to Oxford before?" Zeph asked, previous quarrel forgotten already.
"Maybe. I don't know. Possibly." Cadeyrn responded, taking his moment of hesitation to catch up to him. Zeph absentmindedly picked her up, settled her in his left arm, took one last bite of the apple, and then threw it to the ground. He continued on, only pausing long enough to look at a stall, grab a meat pie happily, and continue on through this hardly-known city.
